Welcome

Welcome to my online gallery.

Like many photographers, maybe most, the pictures I create are made to capture some part of how I respond to what I see – be it with awe, be it wonder, be it excitement, fascination, amazement, amusement or simply a sense of peace. But the success or failure of a picture is in what is conveyed to the observer, in the extent to which he or she shares that response, how much he is stirred, moved, intrigued or involved. A serious photographer doesn't take a picture, he makes it. He produces the picture he wants, not the one the camera wants. Whether that's by the painstaking arrangement of the components, by critical timing or by careful editing, even the straightest of photographs involves skill and art and experience and knowledge. Because, at its best, a photograph isn’t a straight record of a scene any more that a sketch is a finished painting. The photographer, like the artist, uses all the techniques at his disposal to present not just what he sees, but the way he sees it.

Why Photography Plus? Well, two main reasons. First, I hope to use the site, in time, to extend into other media, such as drawing and paintings, but also because I provide a commentary for my pictures. The commentary is not an explanation of technique, or the difficulties involved in taking the picture, but it is a background, a context that is a bridge that leads you into an image. Its purpose is to share not just the result, but the experience.

As in any gallery, there are prints for sale – like many photographers, I don’t do it for the money, but I need money to do it. But I’m just as interested to know how people respond to my pictures in non-financial ways. Please use the contact page not just for orders but for your comments too.

Enjoy!
